We’ve all been in that situation: you notice something is wrong with the car or a passenger needs to stop urgently, and your instinct tells you to pull over and get out. But before opening the door, a question arises: is it allowed to get out in the middle of the highway, given how dangerous the traffic is at those speeds?
The short answer is: almost never. However, the DGT regulations have recently changed, and it is vital to know the details to avoid fines of up to 200 euros and, most importantly, to save your life.
The general rule: No getting out of the vehicle allowed
According to the General Traffic Regulations, it is strictly forbidden to walk on highways and motorways. This includes, of course, getting out of the car if it stops due to a breakdown or minor incident.
The DGT’s logic is simple: the greatest risk on a motorway is not the breakdown itself, but the collision. A pedestrian on a high-speed road is virtually invisible until it’s too late.
What to do if your car breaks down?
For some years now, the rules have changed precisely with the aim of preventing accidents. If you notice the car starting to malfunction, ideally you shouldn’t brake suddenly; try to reach the next exit or a service area. If the car can’t go any further, look for the right shoulder and move as far away from the road as you can.
Here’s the most important thing: stay inside the car. The DGT now asks us not to leave the vehicle. It’s best to wait with your seatbelt fastened until roadside assistance or the Civil Guard arrives. You should only leave if you see a really safe place off the road (like behind the guardrail), and always do so through the door that doesn’t face the road.
Forget about the triangles (on highways)
I’m sure you remember those tense moments walking along the track to put up the warning triangles. Well, that’s already history on the expressways. They have been removed because the risk of being run over was extremely high. Now the priority is the approved V-16 light with connection to the DGT 3.0 platform, (Make sure it is the model with GPS), you just have to put your arm out the window, place it on the roof and that’s it. They can see you from afar while you remain safely inside the car.
What if it's a real emergency and I have to leave?
There are extreme situations, such as a fire risk, where there is no other option but to get off. If you find yourself in that situation, do it carefully:
- Keep the vest handy: Don't store it in the trunk. Keep it in the glove compartment or under the seat so you can put it on before opening the door.
- Exit on the side with no traffic: Always use the door opposite to oncoming traffic.
- Seek shelter: As soon as you are out, move as far away from the asphalt as possible and stay behind the side barriers.
